Grounding My Spirit in September: Psalms for a New Season
September has always been that “new year before the new year.” If you grew up in the UK, you’ll know what I mean. Whether you’re heading back to school, navigating university, stepping into further studies, or even years beyond formal education, September carries that “fresh start” weight. The routines shift, the weather changes dramatically, and suddenly summer feels like it never happened.
But this year feels different.
I’ve been reflecting on how much peace I carried into September, especially after such a joyful and needed summer. Summer was healing—celebrating love, travelling, experiencing joy in friendships, and balancing solitude with reflection. It was a season I didn’t even realise I needed after a spiritually and emotionally draining winter and spring. And now, rather than anxiously bracing myself for what’s next, I feel rooted.
The Psalms have been my anchor in this transition. What I love about the Psalms is that they capture every human emotion—fear, joy, lament, hope, trust—and yet they always circle back to God’s faithfulness. For me, as the weather turns and my calendar shifts, I’ve chosen to lean into the Psalms not as poetry, but as grounding prayers.
Here are five Psalms I’m leaning on this September:
Psalm 4:8 – “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
For the anxious nights when change feels overwhelming, God promises rest and safety.
Psalm 16:11 – “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
For the days you’re unsure of the path ahead—God not only directs but delights you with joy on the way.
Psalm 18:19 – “He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.”
September as a spacious place—God making room for your becoming, not because of your striving, but His delight.
Psalm 30:5 – “Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.”
For those carrying heaviness into this new season—hold on. God’s joy is breaking through.
Psalm 65:11 – “You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance.”
A verse to carry into autumn: God has already crowned this season with provision.
This September, I want to encourage you: don’t rush the transition, but don’t fear it either. God is not just in the endings or the beginnings—He’s in the middle, weaving joy, safety, rescue, and provision through every detail.
So whether you’re starting something new, continuing something old, or simply holding on, take these Psalms as anchors for the journey. Breathe them in. Pray them out loud. Let them remind you: God’s grace crowns this new season.
