Learning to Receive – The Love Language of Receiving Gifts

There’s something deeply meaningful about receiving gifts, yet for many (myself included), it’s not always the easiest love language to accept.

I never thought much about it until I realised just how much unlearning I needed to do. For a long time, I found it far easier to give than to receive—perhaps because receiving sometimes felt uncomfortable, or as though I had to earn it.

But God is the ultimate giver. His love, mercy, and peace are gifts freely given—not because we deserve them, but because He loves us. And when I truly allowed myself to receive those gifts with gratitude, my entire perspective shifted.

The Ultimate Gift: Life & Salvation

📖 James 1:17 reminds us:

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights."

For the past five months, I’ve been living in what I can only describe as a multifaceted answered prayer—one I never saw coming, yet one I’m deeply grateful for. And every morning, I wake up with a heart full of thanks, knowing that God's love, mercy, and faithfulness sustain me.

A Small Gift That Sparked Big Joy

Recently, I attended the @shopkem makeup masterclass & sample sale (which was amazing, by the way), and inside the goodie bag was a small scripture remix. At first, I didn’t think much of it, but on my way home, I caught a glimpse of it—and suddenly, my heart was filled with unexplainable joy.

It was a reminder that gifts don’t always have to be grand. Sometimes, the smallest things—kind words, thoughtful gestures, small acts of kindness—can carry immense love and meaning.

How to Grow in the Love Language of Receiving Gifts

If you struggle with receiving, here are some things that have helped me:
💛 Recognise God’s gifts daily – Whether big or small, acknowledge His blessings in your life.
💛 Start a gratitude jar – Write down moments of provision, love, and unexpected joy.
💛 Receive with an open heart – Whether it’s a compliment, a helping hand, or a thoughtful gift, allow yourself to accept love freely.

At the end of the day, receiving isn’t just about material things—it’s about embracing love in all forms. And when we learn to receive well, we also grow in our understanding of God’s abundant grace.

🔥 What’s the best ‘unexpected gift’ you’ve received lately?
