Feeling God’s Love Through Physical Touch
Physical touch is often overlooked as a way to experience God’s love, but it’s deeply biblical.
We see it in Jesus’ ministry—when He laid hands on the sick, blessed children, and even performed the powerful act of communion. These physical acts weren’t just rituals; they were tangible expressions of love, comfort, and healing.
Growing up as an only child in a single-parent household, my experience with physical touch was complex. There were seasons when I spent a lot of time with my mum, and others when life’s demands created distance. I was a naturally affectionate child—always reaching for a hand to hold, wanting a hug, or playfully squeezing cheeks. But my mum, as a lone parent navigating the weight of life’s responsibilities, couldn’t always meet that need in the way I desired.
In the absence of consistent physical affection, I unconsciously sought ways to fill the void. Now, as I reflect on my faith journey, I realise that God, in His kindness, has always provided ways for me to experience His closeness. Through acts like communion, anointing with oil, and even the laying on of hands in prayer, I tangibly feel His love and promises.
One of my favourite scriptures reminds me of this:
“Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you.’” – Matthew 26:27
Communion is more than a symbolic act; it’s a moment of deep intimacy with God, a reminder that we are never alone. Similarly, the simple act of placing a hand over my heart in prayer, or anointing my body with oil, reminds me of His presence. I’ve also learned to embrace physical touch in everyday moments—whether through an encouraging pat on the back, a comforting embrace, or even playful hand games with loved ones.
That’s why my recent video of playing a handclapping game with my mum is so special to me. It’s a symbol of connection, a small but powerful reminder that love—whether from family, friends, or God—can be felt in the simplest of ways.
How You Can Experience God’s Love Through Physical Touch:
📖 Participate in Communion: Whether at church or in a personal moment at home, reflect on Jesus’ sacrifice and let it draw you closer to Him.
🙏🏽 Anoint Yourself or Others: Anointing oil is a biblical symbol of blessing, healing, and consecration. Use it as a physical reminder of God’s love.
🤝 The Power of Prayer with Touch: If you’re comfortable, hold hands with someone as you pray together. There’s power in agreement and connection.
💖 Small Gestures Matter: A hug, a pat on the shoulder, or even placing a hand over your heart during worship can remind you of God’s nearness.
No matter our past experiences with physical touch, God meets us where we are. He created us to feel love, to experience closeness, and to know that He is near—sometimes in the most unexpected ways.
