The Women in Exodus – Faith in Unexpected Places
Happy International Women’s Day! Honestly, I was going to churn towards writing a post around the theme of the Proverbs 31 woman, Mary the mother of Jesus, Ruth or even Lydia - very popular women in the bible. Still, as I have been studying the reading of the bible from Genesis this year, I was reminded about incredible women! So excited to share!
Before Moses became a deliverer, God placed the mission in the hands of women.
When we think of Exodus, we picture Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt, but before he could part the Red Sea, a group of brave women made his survival possible. These women—some named, others unnamed—were bold, strategic, and vital in fulfilling God’s plan.
1. The Midwives – Shiphrah and Puah (Exodus 1:15–21)
Pharaoh ordered all Hebrew baby boys to be killed at birth, but these two midwives feared God more than the king. They protected the vulnerable, and in return, God blessed them with families of their own.
📖 Lesson: Obedience to God over man brings divine reward.
2. Jochebed – The Mother Who Let Go (Exodus 2:1–3)
Moses’s mother risked everything to save her child. She placed him in the Nile, trusting God would protect him. Her surrender led to divine intervention.
📖 Lesson: Letting go in faith often leads to unexpected blessings.
3. Miriam – The Watchful Sister (Exodus 2:4–8)
Moses’s sister didn’t just watch from a distance—she acted. She arranged for Moses’s own mother to nurse him, keeping him connected to his roots.
📖 Lesson: Your small acts of obedience have a great impact.
4. Pharaoh’s Daughter – The Compassionate Royal (Exodus 2:5–10)
Despite being Egyptian royalty, she defied the Pharaoh’s decree and adopted a Hebrew child. Her compassion played a role in shaping Israel’s future.
📖 Lesson: God uses unexpected people to fulfil His plans.
What This Means for Women Today
💡 Every role is significant—whether named or unnamed, each woman’s obedience contributed to deliverance.
💡 Faith in action changes destinies—these women made choices that shaped history.
💡 Your position is your ministry—whether you are a mother, leader, or servant, God is using you where you are.
Reflection:
Which of these women resonates with you the most, and why?
🙌🏾 If you found this encouraging, share it with a sister who needs a reminder that God is still writing her story.
