Pan-Fried Seabass with Boiled Dumpling, with Garlic Spinach and Sweetcorn

Preparing and Walking into Overflow

As I prepared my seabass meal the other day—crispy, golden fillets accompanied by vibrant roasted vegetables and a bed of herbed couscous—I found myself reflecting on how food nourishes not just the body but also the soul. Creating something wholesome and satisfying from simple ingredients reminded me of God’s provision and the abundance He offers us in every season.

October’s theme, Overflow, has been on my heart lately. It’s a reminder of the promise found in John 10:10:

"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I have come that they may have life and have it to the full."

To live life to the full is to experience the overflow of God’s goodness—not just in material blessings but in peace, joy, and spiritual fulfilment. Often, we think of abundance in terms of having more, but God’s overflow operates differently. His abundance flows into the areas where we need it most: grace for our shortcomings, strength in our weakness, and provision in our lack.

Although October has come and gone, I think about how God gives us just what we need, often exceeding our expectations through scripture. He doesn’t just provide; He provides abundantly. The meal was simple, yet every bite was a reflection of care and intention—ingredients coming together in a way that felt comforting and full. This is the same way God works in our lives. He takes the small, seemingly ordinary moments and fills them with His extraordinary presence.

But to truly live in this overflow, we must create space for it. Just as I prepared my meal by cutting, seasoning, and arranging the ingredients, our hearts and spirits require preparation too. Overflow doesn’t happen in cluttered, stagnant spaces. It happens when we trust God enough to let go of what’s holding us back—doubt, fear, or control—and make room for His plans to unfold.

I’m learning that nourishment, whether through food or faith, requires intention. It’s about pausing long enough to recognise His hand in the every day, to give thanks for the sustenance He provides, and to trust that He’s working all things for good. The seabass reminded me that even the simplest things can reflect God’s overflow when we approach them with a heart of gratitude.

So, as we embrace this season of overflow, let’s ask ourselves:

  • Are we creating space in our lives for God’s abundance?

  • How are we nourishing not just our bodies but our spirits?

Take time this week/month to reflect on where you see God’s overflow in your life. Maybe it’s in a meal shared with loved ones, an unexpected breakthrough, or the quiet moments of peace on a hectic day. Whatever it is, know that His abundance is always present—ready to fill you, sustain you, and overflow into every corner of your life.

"You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." — Psalm 23:5
